The best students of the Karol Szymanowski State Music School, accompanied by the Toruń Symphony Orchestra, will be the soloists of the concert. The young artists will face the challenge of performing the most famous works of classical music. Performances like those will allow them to present their talent and skills in front of a large audience.
We are approaching another concert of the students of the Karol Szymanowski Complex of State Music Schools with the Toruń Symphonic Orchestra, an event invariably accompanied by great excitement. Youth, ardour, enthusiasm, years of work and sacrifices. Is it worth it? Certainly, for example for such moments as this one today. However, before we immerse ourselves in quiet admiration for the performers or call out for joy and rush to congratulate them, let us look at this evening’s programme which includes works representing different trends, styles, and eras. This great celebration of the students and their professors will open with a work of the master, Ludwig van Beethoven – the overture to Egmont, Op. 84.
The master from Bonn was a great admirer of Goethe, so he was overjoyed when the poet asked him to write an overture to the already completed tragedy Egmont. The overture of the same title is initiated by chords that may symbolise a victorious warrior fighting for his motherland. In Goethe’s work, Egmont plays the role of the steward of Flanders, imprisoned and put to death for taking part in the uprising against the Spanish tormentors. The most beautiful parts of the score undoubtedly include Klärchen’s Lied and the Larghetto to the scene of Klärchen’s death. Beethoven’s words addressed to Goethe show that the poet’s tragedy was very close to the composer’s heart: “You will hear my music to Egmont. While reading this work, I was living it and ruminating over it deeply and sincerely, like you, and I was striving to express it in the music. I would very much wish to hear your opinion about it. From your mouth, even a rebuke will be valuable for me and my art; I will receive it with the same gratitude as I would the highest praise.”

There is no intermission in the concert.
